Chinese Painting #3

In this article I learned changes in Chinese painting in differenst time period.  The earliest paintings were just patterns or design, like spirals, zigzags, dots or lines.  The early pottery were painted in a similar way.  From the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), the painting style started to change.  The painters started to paint the world around them.  Artists from the Han (202 BC) to the Tang (618-906) dynasties started to paint human figures.  We know this from discovered the early paainting inside the tomb. They often painted on the tomb wall, silk banners, etc.  Tomb painting is to protect the dead to have peace at heaven, or to show how rich the family were.  Some of the tomb paintings are well preserved, so the scientist can study from it.  Now at the modern China,  artists started to using new techniques.
One thing that I found interesting is the painting Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival by Zhang Zeduan in Song Dysnaty.  This is the only but famou painting he left.  It's unbelievable huge.  (25.5 by 525 cm=q10 in by 17 ft 3 in)  Is captured the daily life in the city, Kaifeng.  The painting included hundreds of people, livestocks,  up to sixty buildings, bridges, boats, and yet, everyone of them are different.  This is why this painting is so amazing.

What Makes a Society Just?

A ruler is like a heart to the society, so the decision he makes is very important to the society.  A ruler should be responsible for the the quality of life for his citizens.  For example, today in many countries has medical insurance up to eighteen year old, so the lower income family don't have worry about paying the expensive medical bills.  In addition, a good ruler should also be responsible to become a role model for other people, otherwise, no one is going to listen to him.  For example, Gandhi is a leader of Indian right movement who started to refuse to pay tax and make salt by hands.

A heart without limbs is going to be useless, the way citizens behave is also important.  This is where human natures comes in play.  I think people are naturally good.  People at birth are naturally good.  Their natures are similar, but their habits the environment make them different.  For example, the babies make mistakes but not their starting point is always harmless, in comparism to experienced adult, (not all of them) they know what is best for their life so they will pay anything to reach the goal regardless of money, or going against law.

Government also plays a important role in a just society.  Everyone should be equal no matter how rich or poor you are.  In terms of tax, everyone should be paying the same amount of tax, there's no right that says rich people should pay more and poor people pay less.  And there's no standard that can divide up rich and poor people.

Honor codes are the way how people should behave within the society.  Just like school's Character Counts motivate people to be have better behavior,  but people doesn't follow them all the time, you still see fights, bullying going on in the school.  Honor code only have a little affect to us unless there's exciting reward.

Chinese painting is the one of the oldest traditional painting in the world.  It uses the same techniques that calligraphy use.  They both use the materials called "the four treasures  of study".  It include the writing brush, ink stick, ink slab and paper.  The paper they use is called Xuan paper or rice paper, it's made of  the bark of a common species of elm.  Xuan paper have a smooth and fine texture, which make the painting The process of making Xuan paper is complicated and some of them are secret.  The finished work can be put on scroll, whether is a hanging scroll or hand scroll.

There's two main types of Chinese painting are Gong-bi and Shui-mo.  Gong-bi means "meticulous".  This style of painting has highly detailed brushstrokes, and it requires close attention while painting.  The painter have to draw the outlines first, and then add colors layer by layer to be able to build up the effect of the painting.

The second branch is called Shui-mo.  Basic Shui-mo painting shown as black and white, because it only uses black ink to work with, but there are differents techniques by add or lessen water to make different effects, such as thick, light, dry or wet.
